Ted spent the last $49 to join and made $600 within 30 days: a freelancing case study from Kenya

Kenya flagTed, 20KenyaFreelancing campusThe Real World’s own interview, 4 minutes. It loads only when you press play.

Ted, in Kenya, “took a risk” and “gambled $49, which was all the money that I had”. In a student interview published on The Real World’s own website, Ted describes what came next: “day in, day out, constantly watching Dylan Madden’s videos” on outreach, and a community that checked “every single day” that “you actually sent out the DMs or the emails”. Then, “more or less within the 30 days, I got my first win”: “$600 to me, that was life-changing money”, “almost double what the average salary was”, made “off of my phone and off of my laptop at the age of 20”.

Three things to know first. The figure: the caption says “New revenue: $3,000/month”, which Ted doesn’t say in this video; Ted’s figure is the $600 first win. The campus: the caption says Freelancing, and there is no Freelancing campus in the app today; in a later interview Ted says it “is now the Client Acquisition campus”, which is Ted’s account, not an official statement. And that later interview, hosted by Tristan Tate, gives a much larger total, “upwards of 30 grand”; both are set out below. Below: what Ted says, in Ted’s own words and step by step; what the app shows today; reviews from other members; and who this path suits. The full transcript is under “What Ted said”. Everything here comes from the interviews, The Real World’s own captions and app, or the sources listed at the end.

At a glance

  • Who

Ted, from Kenya: “someone like me from a third world country, Kenya” (4:32). Ted was 20 at the first win, by Ted’s account: “at the age of 20” (0:48). The Real World’s caption on this video says 18; Ted’s later interview says 21.

  • Starting point

“I gambled $49, which was all the money that I had. I spent the last $49 that I had” (0:04). $49 was the price then; it is $99 a month today.

  • How Ted found it

Through talks about The Real World and “how, like, you should join” (0:00); the start of that sentence is unclear in every reading. The later interview names podcasts with Andrew and Tristan Tate.

  • Campus

Freelancing, in the caption. Ted names the professor: “constantly watching Dylan Madden’s videos” (0:16) on how to send outreach DMs. The official site names Professor Dylan Madden for its Client Acquisition campus.

  • Timeline

“more or less within the 30 days, I got my first win” (0:29). The video doesn’t name the year; it was on The Real World’s home page by 8 June 2023.

  • Result (video)

“$600 to me, that was life-changing money” (0:36), “almost double what the average salary was” (0:43). That is the first win; this video gives no monthly figure.

  • Result (caption)

The Real World’s caption: “Ted, 18”, “New revenue: $3,000/month”, and that “After learning Video Editing and Freelancing in TRW”, Ted “generates double” the country’s “monthly wage”.

The caption and Ted don’t say the same thing. In the video, “almost double” the average salary is the $600 first win; the caption puts “double” the monthly wage next to $3,000 a month, a figure Ted doesn’t give here, and video editing isn’t mentioned in this video. By 16 February 2024 The Real World’s home page showed a second interview with Ted, with Tristan Tate interviewing and the caption “Ted - 25 - 30K /month”. In it Ted says “I’m 21” (0:16), “since joining, I’ve made upwards of 30 grand” (4:40) and “I’ve been inside for about five months” (4:46); no currency is given and revenue or profit isn’t said. The caption’s “30K /month” is not Ted’s “upwards of 30 grand” since joining. The same interview says it was “back in 2022” (1:43) that Ted was learning video editing, which doesn’t sit easily with “about five months”; the video doesn’t explain it, and this site can’t. The figures are Ted’s and The Real World’s own; this site hasn’t seen them.

Transcribed on 30 October 2026 from the interview audio with Whisper speech recognition (run locally): a first pass on 26 October, then two more full passes with the medium and small models; punctuation fixed, fillers dropped, nothing added; “[unclear]” marks words the passes don’t agree on or can’t make out. The opening words at 0:00 are garbled in every reading (“I saw and you take state talks”, “I saw, and you take talks”), probably a reference to Tate’s talks, and are marked [unclear]. At 0:28 every reading hears “charts” (probably “chats”); at 1:22 the talks are heard as “money bug”, “money bag” and “money back”; at 2:02 and 2:13 the professors’ names are heard as “Arnold” or “Anu” and “Luke” or “look”; all are marked [unclear]. At 1:17 “Dylan Madden” is also heard as “Dylan Martin” and “Dylan modern”. Speaker labels are ours. The interviewer is from The Real World, not a Tate. The $49 and $50 mentioned were the price at the time; today it is $99 a month on the official checkout. The second interview (Stream 7b95d118, hosted by Tristan Tate) was checked the same way at the lines quoted on this page.

0:00 Ted: I saw [unclear] talking about The Real World and how, like, you should join. So I took a risk, I gambled $49, which was all the money that I had. I spent the last $49 that I had, joined The Real World, and more or less that motivated me to work. So I was in The Real World day in, day out, constantly watching Dylan Madden's videos on testimonials, how to send outreach DMs. I was constantly engaging with the people in the [unclear] and all that. So yeah, more or less within the 30 days, I got my first win, and yeah, it honestly changed my life, because $600 to me, that was life-changing money. That was money that I never, never could see myself making, because that's more or less almost double what the average salary was. And me making that off of my phone and off of my laptop at the age of 20 in a third world country, that was just life-changing, to be honest.

0:56 Interviewer: And how different would you say the material is in The Real World compared to what's out there on the internet?

1:02 Ted: Okay, so with The Real World, you've been taught by actual millionaires. Like, there's actually credibility in what these people are saying. Number one. Number two, these people did not really lie to you. They're actually legit. You can actually tell that these people have a best interest at heart. Because you look at someone like Dylan Madden, this guy takes time out of his day to sit down and actually, you know, his [unclear] talks, busy telling you guys, literally laying it down in real time, step by step, how to make money. As in, with The Real World, it's gotten to a stage whereby it's impossible for you to not make money, because literally, yeah, Hustlers University was really good, but with The Real World, they literally take the information they dish out there, they literally took the information in Hustlers University and they spoon-feed it to you. It is literally so easy to make money with The Real World because they make it extremely simple.

1:57 Ted: And plus, The Real World, they don't focus on money alone. They focus on all aspects of life. So you look at [unclear], [unclear] talks about life skills, masculinity, and also even making money in The Real World. You go to Andrew [unclear], you look at his talks, his Power Up morning calls and all that. And then you [unclear] listen to [unclear] lectures on how to manage your time, how to be a professional and all that. And that's just something they push out in general. There's even a calisthenics course. So more or less, for $49, you're more or less getting everything to do with the masculine imperative. So all you have to do is just give up a Netflix subscription and that will literally change your life. For the value, I think it's an underpriced asset, if I'm being honest.

2:39 Ted: The community, they hold you accountable. So every single day they see to it that you actually sent out the DMs or the emails. They see to it that every single day you got your workout in. They more or less see to it that you're actually disciplined and you actually do what you're supposed to do. They help you out, they critique your work, they give you feedback. More or less, that's how the community has helped.

3:05 Interviewer: And now for people who are maybe on the fence, just not quite sure whether to join The Real World or not, what advice would you give them?

3:15 Ted: Well, joining The Real World, okay, $50. There are the courses out there that, I don't know, charge $1,000, and all the person does is he just gives you a course and that's it. He just leaves you to figure it out for yourself. The people, the professors in The Real World, number one, all of them are rich. All of them have physicality. You don't see any soy boys in The Real World. All of them, you can literally see with your own two eyes that these guys are actually living the life [unclear]. These people made the money before selling you the information on how to make the money. Whereas for other courses, these people literally make the millions off of selling you guys [unclear]. You come to The Real World, it's legit. For $50, professors literally talk to you every day. They literally motivate you every single day. They take time out of their busy schedules to teach you guys how to get rich. They go through, they just do whatever it takes in their power to ensure that you're rich, ensure that you're well as a man and all that.

4:18 Ted: So yeah, you're not being taught by soy boys. You're being taught by people who actually know what they're talking about. And just even their mentality, it's just going to bleed on onto you. So with The Real World, definitely, for $50, it's worth it. If someone like me from a third world country, Kenya, if I can make that kind of money, then anyone in the world, for as long as you have a phone, you have a wifi network, you have a laptop and you have Instagram and you have the burning desire to work, I kid you not, you're going to succeed. So more or less, The Real World has made it possible for anybody on earth to succeed.

What The Real World offers today

Ted was in the campus The Real World’s caption calls Freelancing. There is no campus by that name in the app today: the “My Campuses” list in the owner’s account on 26 October 2026 has twelve, and none is called Freelancing. In the later interview Ted says it “is now the Client Acquisition campus” (1:56); that is Ted’s account, and The Real World hasn’t said so itself. The professor Ted names, Dylan Madden, is the one the official site names for its Client Acquisition campus, which isn’t in the app’s list either; in the app, the recordings of those live calls sit in the Profit Systems campus. Ted later moved to the Content Creation + AI campus, called AI Creative in the app. Below: the app’s campus list today, the Profit Systems and AI Creative courses, how a new member starts, and what support is like.

How you get started

  1. Join and add campuses

One membership covers every campus: $99 a month or $996 a year on the official checkout. Inside the app you add campuses from the “My Campuses” list.

  2. Choose where to start

With no budget, the official courses page points to Client Acquisition, Strategic Marketing or AI Automation. By Ted’s later account, Ted tried copywriting first, then freelancing, then video editing (1:08 to 1:30 in that video).

  3. Learn outreach, then send it every day

Ted watched “how to send outreach DMs”, and the community checked “every single day” that “you actually sent out the DMs or the emails” (2:43).

  4. Ask for feedback

Ted: “They help you out, they critique your work, they give you feedback” (2:57).

What support is like

  • Accountability. Ted: “The community, they hold you accountable” (2:39), checking the DMs, the emails and even the workouts. That is Ted’s account; The Real World publishes no response-time promise.
  • Professors. Ted: “For $50, professors literally talk to you every day” (3:58). The official About page says professors are “active daily for real-time questions”. The $50 was the price then; it is $99 a month today.
  • No guarantee. The Real World’s Terms of Use say it doesn’t guarantee any financial outcome. Every campus starts from the fundamentals and assumes no prior knowledge.

What members said on Trustpilot

Trustpilot has since removed The Real World’s profiles. These excerpts come from archived copies of those pages, read on 25 October 2026, with the reviewer’s first name, country and date as shown; “Invited” is Trustpilot’s label for reviews that came through a business link. The jointherealworld.com.de profile was not run by The Real World; reviewers used it anyway. They are reviews of The Real World as a whole, not of one campus, and other people’s words, not this site’s findings.

“The biggest thing for me, besides the lessons and the professors, is the community. You have a problem, ask a question in chat, fixed in 5 minutes.”

Sergiu (RO), 27 Dec 2022 · archived www.cobratate.com page

“after a month, I informed them that their services were not suitable for me. Despite my clear communication, they attempted to withdraw a significant amount of money from my credit card for an additional two months.”

For the record, the scores on 27 February 2025: the profile at trwstudent.com showed 2.9 from 23 reviews, and therealworldeducation.com showed 4.4 from 82, most of them invited through a business link over two days. Both profiles have since been removed.

Is this path for you?

It may suit you if

  • You will put in the hours. Ted was in it “day in, day out”.
  • You will send outreach every day. The community checked that Ted “actually sent out the DMs or the emails”.
  • You want feedback on your work. Ted: “they critique your work, they give you feedback”.
  • You will try more than one skill. By Ted’s later account, Ted tried copywriting, then freelancing, then video editing.

It may not suit you if

  • You would spend money you need to live on. Ted did, and it worked out for Ted; that is one person’s story, not advice.
  • You are looking for a Freelancing campus. There is none in the app’s campus list today.
  • You take “impossible for you to not make money” (1:30) at face value. That is Ted’s view; The Real World’s Terms of Use say it doesn’t guarantee any financial outcome, and Ted’s figures are Ted’s own.
  • You can only give it the odd hour. The official courses page says “the checklist expects a few focused hours per day” and that “Members who treat it as a side interest see little.”

Ted’s numbers are one student’s account, given in interviews The Real World chose to publish. To compare the campuses on offer today, see the guide to The Real World campuses; for paying from Kenya and elsewhere, see joining The Real World from outside the US.
